Winter Snowshoe Trekking

Welcome to my 'guiding' page. If you are on a ski ing trip this winter and fancy a day off why not give me a call and arrange a days snow shoeing in the local forests or up to one of the many magnificent peaks of the Abruzzo region.

I can also offer 'Avalanche awareness training' for those planning to ski away from the pisted slopes or wanting to go snow shoeing on their own. Click on the tab at the top of this page for more details.

What is Snow Shoeing?

Being out in the forests and mountains in the snow is such a different experience from a summer day out. Its normally quieter and if you want to experience nature at its finest this is the way to do it. Using specially designed 'rackets' that you can attach to any walking boot and carrying a ski pole in each hand (or ordinary trekking poles with 'snow baskets' at the bottom) you can get out and almost glide through the snow without sinking into it! Typical days out for me include leaving the recognised trail routes and finding our own way through the forests, perhaps picking up animal trails on route and tracking them! I also carry a telescope so hopefully we can 'spot' the wildlife without disturbing it.

Suggested Itineraries

Beyond Sulmona

A 30 minute drive beyond Pacentro and you can undertake a days outing in the Majella. Freedom to wonder in the vast expances of beech forest and high mountain. More recently I've also been out near Piano Della Cinque Miglia, a mountain plateau, set at 1200m with surrounding summits that are ideal snow shoe terrain. This area is less than 30 minutes from Sulmona. I can also offer easier days out in the pine and beech forests just a 10 minute drive from Sulmona.

Around Scanno

1 hours drive from Sulmona is the ancient mountain village of Scanno. Just beyond the village are some fantastic walks that will take you up through the beech forest, typical of this region, onto the summits of the Marsicani Mountains. A fantastic day out on snow shoes with views across the Parco D'Abruzzo.

Orvindoli

Away from the busy slopes of the Ski resort the regional park of Sirente Velino offers a quiet days snow shoeing and tracking the parks wildlife.
