Rocca Calascio is a small and until recently abandoned village 1416 metres above sea level in the Gran Sasso Park on the south side of Campo Imperatore. This small village is now enjoying reguvination and includes the Rifugio della Rocca, our accommodation for the short breaks on offer.
It is also near the villages of San Stefano, a hideaway for escaped WW2 prisoners of war who had escaped from Sulmona and Castel del Monte a picturesque mountain village most recently used in the film 'The American'
The Rifugio is an ideal base for a weekend break with options for guided easy walks to some of the nearby villages or more active excursions to the Campo imperatore plateau and its surrounding mountains.
If you are coming from Rome by car is just over 2 hours drive and if travelling from Pescara then just over 75 minutes. The Rifugio can supply all your meals and has accommodation rangeing from basic bunkhouse, ideal for groups, to private on suite rooms, meals included.
